For many years, Gainesville’s lost and abandoned pets were kept in a small metal building at the city’s transfer station. Tucked away at the local dump, these animals had very little visibility, and their chances of finding a new home were slim. In 2006, a group of dedicated local citizens led by Shelly Gomulak, DVM decided our community deserved better. They envisioned a safe, accessible sanctuary where animals would be treated with dignity and given a true second chance at life.

Through a landmark partnership with the City of Gainesville, Noah’s Ark Animal Shelter was born. Since opening our doors in February 2006, we have transformed animal welfare in Cooke County by shifting the focus from simple impoundment to active rescue. We moved away from a "holding-only" mindset to a comprehensive mission centered on rehabilitation, professional medical care, and successful adoptions.

Over the years, our reach has grown far beyond our walls. From life-saving transport programs to low-cost spay and neuter initiatives, we work to address the root causes of pet overpopulation. Today, we are more than just a shelter. We are a community funded rescue that works tirelessly to ensure no animal is left behind, fueled by the belief that every life is worth saving.

Through the Bissell Pet Foundation’s Empty the Shelters events, Noah’s Ark Animal Shelter is able to offer reduced adoption fees thanks to adoption grant funding—helping more pets find safe, loving homes.
