We understand that life circumstances can change, and sometimes people find themselves facing difficult decisions about their pets. Before choosing to surrender your pet to Noah’s Ark Animal Shelter, we ask that you carefully consider the options below.
For many pets — especially those who have spent most or all of their lives in a home — the shelter environment can be extremely stressful. Even friendly, well-behaved pets can struggle in a kennel setting, leading to anxiety, fear, and behavioral decline that can make adoption more difficult.
In many cases, keeping a pet out of the shelter through responsible rehoming gives them the best chance for a successful transition.
Important Information About Shelter Capacity
Noah’s Ark Animal Shelter truly wants to help and will absolutely do so when space allows. However, available space is often extremely limited.
Our shelter is almost always full, and intake availability can take time. Because we operate in partnership with the City of Gainesville, we are required to accept animals brought in by Animal Control. As Gainesville and Cooke County continue to grow, we are seeing more stray and abandoned animals than ever before, many of whom must be taken in immediately.
This means:
- Animal Control intakes must be prioritized
- Strays arrive daily and unpredictably
- Available space can change quickly
- Owner surrenders may require a waiting period
Due to the constant influx of strays and limited kennel space, owner-surrendered pets may take longer to schedule for intake, even when we want to help. Calling ahead and planning early gives us the best chance to work with you.
Alternatives To Consider
Responsible Rehoming (Often the Best Option)
For pets currently living in a home, direct rehoming is often the least
traumatic option.

Many families also successfully rehome pets through local Facebook
rehoming groups, which can help connect pets with adopters in the
community.
Moving or Housing Changes
Housing challenges are one of the most common reasons pets lose their homes. Before surrendering your pet, consider:
- Confirming pet policies before signing a lease
- Asking about deposits, size limits, or breed restrictions
- Reaching out to friends or family who may be able to help temporarily
Planning ahead can often prevent a last-minute crisis.
Behavior Concerns
Behavior challenges are often situational, especially during times of stress or change. Some issues may improve with time, consistency, or professional guidance, while others may be more complex. Helpful steps may include:
- Consulting a qualified trainer or behaviorist
- Ruling out medical causes
- Increasing structure, exercise, and enrichment
A pet that struggles in a shelter environment may do better remaining in a
home while these concerns are addressed.
Financial Hardship
Temporary financial hardship does not mean you’ve failed your pet.
When resources allow, Noah’s Ark may have:
